A New Modal Framework for Epistemic Logic

چکیده

Recent years witnessed a growing interest in non-standard epistemic logics of knowing whether, knowing how, knowing what, knowing why and so on. The new epistemic modalities introduced in those logics all share, in their semantics, the general schema of ∃x φ , e.g., knowing how to achieve φ roughly means that there exists a way such that you know that it is a way to ensure that φ . Moreover, the resulting logics are decidable. Inspired by those particular logics, in this work, we propose a very general and powerful framework based on quantifier-free predicate language extended by a new modality x, which packs exactly ∃x together. We show that the resulting language, though much more expressive, shares many good properties of the basic propositional modal logic over arbitrary models, such as finite-tree-model property and van Benthem-like characterization w.r.t. first-order modal logic. We axiomatize the logic over S5 frames with intuitive axioms to capture the interaction between x and know-that operator in an epistemic setting.

Why Do We Need Justification Logic?

In this paper, we will sketch the basic system of Justification Logic, which is a general logical framework for reasoning about epistemic justification. Justification Logic renders a new, evidence-based foundation for epistemic logic. As a case study, we compare formalizations of the Kripke ‘Red Barn’ scenario in modal epistemic logic and Justification Logic and show here that the latter provid...

Justification Logic

We describe a general logical framework, Justification Logic, for reasoning about epistemic justification. Justification Logic is based on classical propositional logic augmented by justification assertions t:F that read t is a justification for F. Justification Logic absorbs basic principles originating from both mainstream epistemology and the mathematical theory of proofs. It contributes to ...

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost: Dynamic Epistemic Reasoning in Navigation

In everyday life, people get lost even when they have the map: they simply may not know where they are in the map. However, when moving forward they may have new observations which can help to locate themselves by reasoning. In this paper, we propose and develop a semantic-driven dynamic epistemic framework to handle epistemic reasoning in such navigation scenarios. Our framework can be viewed ...

Temporalizing Modal Epistemic Logic

Timed Modal Epistemic Logic, tMEL, is a newly introduced logical framework for reasoning about the modeled agent's knowledge. The framework, derived from the study of Justi cation Logic, is adapted from the traditional Modal Epistemic Logic, MEL, to serve as a logically non-omniscient epistemic logic and dealing with problems where the the temporal constraint is an unavoidable factor. In this p...
